From Oxford and Cambridge to Hogwarts, the school scarf has always taken on a fairly standard description: long, rectangular and striped. When my oldest daughter started junior high at a school with a uniform and school colors, a school scarf was just too obvious a knit to pass up. Eschewing the standard rectangle of thick stripes, I decided for something just way cooler.  School Days is super fun and easy to knit with lots of easy garter stitch and short row shaping, and it produces a scarf which keeps the wearer warm without extra bulk. And it knits up in one weekend making it a perfect gift knit! For this quick TV or travel knit, you could also use team colors, scraps, or whatever two colors you like together!

This is a crescent-ish shaped shawl that is primarily shaped with short rows and made up of both skinny and fat stripes.  No purling needed!

Gauge

Gauge is not super important in this design – use the needle that give you the fabric you want.

17 sts/44 rows = 4” in garter stitch on larger needles

Don’t worry – short rows in garter stitch are as easy as they come.  The wraps don’t show so there is no need to pick them up!
